Hiram Ulysses Grant was born on April 27, 1822, in Pleasant Point, Ohio. During the Civil War he rose to the created rank of of lieutenant general last held by George Washington. A soldier once said of Grant in a review of 6th Corps that he rode his horse like a bag of meal. I was little disappointed in the appearance but like the look in his eye. Grant was a dogged commander who played the numbers game and in the spring of 1864 lost 50,000 men in a month. The enemy would have a hard go trying to replacing their loses.
